If you've taken a listen to "Horton Hears A Who!" I'm sure you've come across several instruments, well, to be more precise, "sounds" that you can't quite identify.   The point of this page is to list as much information about these weird instruments (sounds) as possible.   What they look like, what they sound like, and where you can hear them.

I don't actually know much info about these myself!   I only have a rough idea of what was used, but not where, when or why!   If you have any more info about any of these contraptions, use the contact button at the bottom of each info block to contact me so I can add it!   Whether it's further information on the instrument (sound!), a place where you think it might be heard, or possibly a new discovery, let me know!

BELCH

Use: Confirmed

Additional information: Our nickname for a "burping" sound heard a couple of times in the score.   Not too sure what "instrument" produces it though.   It sounds like brass...

Possible hearings: "Into Whoville/Breakfast With The Mayor" (2:22), "Horton Suite (2:37)

CACTI

Use: Unconfirmed

Additional information: While early on Powell was experimenting with the plucking noises the spikes on cacti make (yes, really), it's unknown whether these were finally used in the score (too painful to play perhaps?)

Possible hearings: "Horton Suite" (2:44)

CAT & DOG TOYS

Use: Confirmed

Additional information: The simple squeaking noise the rubber toys can make is actually disguised pretty well in the score.

Possible hearings: "Banana Wars" (:12), "Horton Suite" (:00)

CO2 (CARBON DIOXIDE) TANKS

Use: Confirmed

Additional information: I'm not quite sure what these were used for.   Possibly used as a form of percussion, different pressures of gas in a tank may produce a different sound.

Possible hearings: Unknown

EUPHONIFAFFAMELOPHONE

Use: Confirmed

Additional information: If someone can even harbor a guess of what this is...let alone what it sounds like!

Possible hearings: Unknown

HAIRY VIOLINS

Use: Confirmed

Additional information: I imagine this looks like a standard violin, but with "rougher" hairs, creating a less pleasing sound.

Possible hearings: "Into Whoville/Breakfast With The Mayor" (1:26), "Horton Suite" (1:58)

TROMBUGLE

Use: Confirmed

Additional information: A cross between a trombone and a bugle.   Not sure what a difference in sound it would make however.   Defiantly still a brass sound though.   Some cool pictures of one here.

Possible hearings: "We Are Here" (:00), (:14)

TWANG BOX

Use: Confirmed

Additional information: Not sure how the "box" part fits into it, but the "twang" part suggests it's plucked.

Possible hearings: "Into Whoville/Breakfast With The Mayor" (1:42), "Horton Suite" (1:43)

WATER SYSTEM

Use: Confirmed

Additional information: It's likely this used to resonate an instruments sound (basically change it).   The final sound is actually something that's quite like a wobble board (also used) but slightly quieter and lower in tone.

Possible hearings: "Into Whoville/Breakfast With The Mayor" (1:20), "Horton Suite" (1:39)

WOBBLE BOARDS

Use: Unconfirmed

Additional information: What I can only think of as being a wobble board!   A bendy piece of material held by both hands, played by "flicking" the material away from you.   The best way to describe the noise is a "whoop-whoop" sound.

Possible hearings: "Cloverfield Search" (:52), "Horton Suite" (4:01)
