The alternative to releasing a score album.   Instead of pure score, compilation albums usually feature a host of songs heard in the film, with maybe one or two score cues tagged on.

The stuff that never makes it to retail but instead is given out to fans/film studios either as nice little presents or to promote the composer.

Viewed in two ways by composers - bad because they're never properly released and should only exist for archival purposes, or good because it shows how far people are willing to go to get their favourite music.
